A Colorful History of Waterfront Sussex County

In the north of the state Delaware, New Castle was the colonial capital until the War of Independence, simply because there were seven waterways upon which one could reach the capital.   Trappers, shipbuilders, farmers and watermen were the first settlers in Sussex County and were attracted to the area because of its waterways. The first towns settled in Sussex County, including Lewes, Fenwick, Milford, Milton and Millsboro were built upon the water. Merchants could sail their flat-bottom boats laden with animals, crafts or agricultural harvest downriver and north along the Delaware Bay to Philadelphia’s marketplace.

After the Civil War the railroad came down the State’s central spine and extended spurs to the waterfront towns. It wasn’t until the eve of the 20th century that people began to seek the water for pleasure. By the 1870’s, residents from the urban areas left the coal dust and the polluted air of the cities to sit on the beaches under a parasol and venture into the water in full-length woolen swimsuits. Physicians recommended the fresh air and the off-shore breezes as natural air conditioning and a “tonic for what ails you”.  It was probably a surprise to find the Delaware bays and estuaries had already been settled for 200 years.
